The ideas of modernity literally toppled religious authority everywhere, and the Jewish world was not immune. Whether it was haskala, communism, or Zionism, masses of Jews abandoned Torah with the hope that these new ideologies would solve all their problems. But after the Holocaust proved that secular "enlightenment" does not eliminate man's base cruelty, only the belief in man's God-given value can bring about a society that is truly humanitarian.
