Now populous and within the city limits of present-day Jerusalem, when these two neighborhoods were originally founded, they were literally in the middle of nowhere. Developed as agricultural settlements that would supply food for the city, their growth from farmland to urban centers is a microcosm of the exponential growth of Israel itself.
