In Biblical times, political and religious authority were one and the same, so the Jews truly lived under a Torah state. That circumstance has never repeated itself, though we have enjoyed periods of limited autonomy. Rabbi Wein applies the lessons of these periods as well as the lessons of the Torah to light our path to the glorious opportunity of the present day: the modern State of Israel.
