The idea of agricultural development of the Land of Israel did not begin with the Zionist movement but with a little known man named Rabbi Mordechai Tzoreif. In a letter appealing to philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore to sponsor his vision, he described what seemed an outlandish dream, but through the efforts of his son and grandson over the succeeding decades, that impossible dream became a concrete reality.
