It’s hard to imagine today, but as long as the Moslems ruled Spain, the Jews enjoyed a privileged status. No pogroms, grandeur and wealth – their lives were dramatically different than their Ashkenazi brethren. But just as the exile is not permanent, no single phase in the exile is permanent, and Rabbi Wein depicts the entire cycle: settling in, the peak with “the Golden Age,” and the Almohad rebellion, the beginning of the end.
