New immigrants always meet with some resentment from the native culture, and this was certainly true when Spanish Jews arrived in Italy en masse. Compounded by the rift between the exiles and conversos within Spanish Jewry, achieving harmony was that much more difficult. But each group found their niche and worked together, forming a tight-knit community in which the Spanish influence was both powerful and positive.
