Some of the scariest passages in Tanach are in Hosea’s rebuke of the Northern Kingdom, the crux of this Haftorah. Chastising Israel for the fatal flaw of arrogance, the prophet nonetheless concludes with the hopeful advice that the door is always open for Jews to return to God.
